What is Breast Lift (mastopexy) Surgery?
Breasts can become saggy for various reasons. The ligaments that hold the breast tissue in place may loosen over time. Depending on weight changes, breastfeeding and the effect of gravity, there may be incompatibility between the breast tissue and the surrounding skin envelope. The problem may be related to breast tissue, skin, or both. As a result, a hollow-looking drooping breast may appear.
As with any other breast surgery, discuss with your doctor why you want to have surgery and what you can expect from this surgery. Tell your doctor if you have a family history of breast disease or cancer, smoking, drug habit or a systemic disease. Ask your doctor about the type of surgery and possible problems.
In the aesthetic breast lift surgery, the sagging breast tissue is reshaped, excess skin is removed, and the nipple is brought to where it should be. The operation is performed under general anesthesia in hospital conditions, in the operating room. It takes 1.5-2 hours. Depending on the degree of sagging and the chosen surgical technique, scars can be left in 3 different ways. Whichever method is applied, it is inevitable to leave scars around the nipple. Either just around the nipple (circumareolar), or in addition to the scar around the nipple, 5-7 cm extending down from the lower edge of the nipple. In addition to all these traces, there may be a horizontal trace (inverted T or anchor-shaped) located in the under-breast groove. There is no scarless breast lift surgery. However, these scars become vague over time.
In patients with insufficient breast volume, it is necessary to place a breast prosthesis to increase the volume at the same time or after the breast lift, in which case the operation is called lifting-augmentation.
Post-surgery is usually comfortable. Pain is usually not a problem. If a breast prosthesis was used during the surgery, there may be limitation in arm movements for a few days. If pipes called drains are placed to draw the blood inside during the surgery, they are removed within 24-72 hours. After one or two dressings, the wound is left open.
