Vaser Liposuction

Vaser Liposuction with Op.Dr Serkan Balta
What is Vaser Liposuction?
Liposuction is an operation in which excess fat accumulations in certain parts of the body are removed by suction with a special vacuum or injectors. It is definitely not a weight loss surgery, it is a body contour (shape) correction surgery. With this surgery, while the fat tissue that is increased in volume and resistant to diet and exercise is removed from the body, the number of existing fat cells is also reduced.

Who is Candidate for Liposuction Surgery?

The number of fat cells in the adult human body is constant. After puberty, the number of fat cells does not increase, but the volume of fat cells increases. This results in weight gain. Dietary habits and lifestyle are the most important factors in people's weight loss.

Proper diet and exercise and a regular lifestyle are essential to get rid of excess weight. However, even people who meet these conditions may have persistent (static) fat deposits that do not disappear. Areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, outer and inner sides of the thighs, knees, which are mostly located in the center of the body, are areas of fat accumulation that are resistant to diet and exercise. Excess fat in these areas is eliminated to some extent by diet and exercise, more exercise and diet results in the deterioration of the body's general metabolism instead of thinning in these areas. The most effective method of getting rid of fat in these areas is liposuction.

How and with which methods liposuction is performed?

In liposuction surgery, the stubborn fat area is first inflated with a special liquid (tumescent) injection. Then, several incisions of a few mm length are made on or near this area. From these incisions, metal pipes called "cannula" with a diameter of 2-6 mm, connected to the vacuum device, are inserted into the subcutaneous layer, depending on the patient's condition. Excess fat begins to be removed by moving the cannulas at the appropriate depth in the fat accumulation areas hardened with the tumescent solution, breaking up and sucking with the grating logic. The process of absorbing the fats by means of vacuum continues until the desired body contour as well as a smooth skin surface is achieved. This method, which is completely based on dexterity and arm strength, is called conventional (classic) liposuction. Today, power-assisted liposuction technique, in which the cannula vibrates automatically with the help of a device, has also been used in order to facilitate and speed up the process. In recent years, ultrasound (Vaser liposuction) and laser (Laser liposuction) energies have also been used. In these methods, excess fat tissues are broken up with ultrasound waves or laser beams, and then they are removed by vacuum in a similar way. Compared to the conventional (classical) method, these two methods have lower complication rates such as pain, bleeding, tissue damage, and fluctuation, while the skin tightens better after surgery.
With liposuction, stubborn excess fat in the deep layers is removed, but with the method called superficial liposuction or “liposculpture” developed in recent years, fat accumulations that cause contour irregularity can also be removed. Liposculpture technique has also become a method that gives good results in removing skin sagging and eliminating stubborn cellulite.

Liposuction has taken its indispensable place in body contour correction today. As long as the aim is contour correction, not weakening, it is an extremely safe and low-risk operation in well-chosen patients, with well-applied techniques in hospital conditions, if the safety limit is not exceeded. Today, the safety limit is accepted as 2.5-4.5 liters in different sources. However, it is also possible to take a larger amount of fat in selected patients. In this case, measures are taken to complete the patient's fluid and electrolyte balance, and sometimes a blood transfusion may be necessary.

Surgery

The operation is performed in hospital conditions, in the operating room and under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. General anesthesia is preferred in multi-site applications. Only local anesthesia can be applied in very limited small areas. The operation takes 1-5 hours depending on the condition of the areas where vacuum will be applied. The cannula entrance holes are closed with dissolving sutures, there is no need for dressing and removal. Sometimes, special thin pipes (drains) are placed in the surgical field through the cannula holes in order to drain the blood and serum accumulated inside and are usually removed after 24 hours. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it is possible to leave the hospital on the same day or after 24 hours.

After Surgery

It's usually comfortable. The pain is very minor and can be relieved with medication. At the end of the operation, the patient is dressed in a special corset, which he will use for 1-3 months, in order to reduce bleeding and serum accumulation and to support shaping and skin tightening. There may be edema, bruises, tingling and burning sensation in the vacuum applied areas. These disappear spontaneously within 1-2 weeks. Cannula entry scars also become indistinct within 2-6 months.
